The Maestrazgo (Maestrat) region of Inland Castellon and Costa Azahar is little known. It is as yet undiscovered and enjoys tranquility and seclusion as well as stunning mountains and valleys. Within the Maestrazgo lies the little town of Atzeneta del Maestrat. With the giant of Penygalosa (the mountain is1872 metres high) as a backdrop, to the passing visitor time could have stopped here 100 years ago. But, it is a thriving community of 1500 people and there are more than 30 shops scattered along tiny backstreets that provide everything for daily living. There is a 24 hour medical centre. The local school has 130 children with not more than 14 children in any one class. There is a sports centre and a swimming pool. Three banks, 5 restaurants including one "Cordon Bleu", 10 bars and a smattering of other businesses to support the cohesive inhabitants. Atzeneta is 35 minutes to Castellon and also 35 minutes to the beach at Orepesa del Mar.
